A few years back, I started digitising works by South African authors in the public domain, making them available to read online.
This project was a part-time labour of love, so I primarily focussed on one author: Sol Plaatje. I have retrodigitised two of his books so far:
Mhudi was digitised from a copy available at the JS Gericke Library at Stellenbosch University. Sechuana Proverbs was digitised from a copy at the National Library of South Africa - Cape Town. I located A Sechuana Reader at the SOAS Library, University of London.
I am still trying to source first editions of the following titles:
- Native Life in South Africa
- Bantu Folk-Tales and Poems
- Dikhontsho tsa bo-Juliuse Kesara (translation of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar)
- Diphosho-phosho (translation of Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors)
I also hope to digitise the poetry by Nontsizi Mgqwetho - a female isiXhosa poet.
I digitised the English-Xhosa Dictionary for Nurses by Neil MacVicar as part of my Masters research, and I will put it online as soon as time allows. I am also developing an online Multilingual Dictionary, which uses this dictionary as the basis.
